Laboratory staff acquire the knowledge and skills to detect pneumocystis infections and other opportunistic infections by microscopy and PCR. Necessary training will be carried out; the range of laboratory diagnostic methods will be broadened, HIV viral load, standard bacteriological tests and additional parasitic (dyeing) procedures will be routinely offered; research projects will be carried out; additional guidelines on hygiene and infection prevention will be introduced; knowledge about HIV and care for affected patients will be exchanged with cooperating centres and internationally.
