Project description
|
During previous projects formal needs assessments were conducted to identify gaps and barriers to palliative care; leadership was identified consistently as a primary gap. Through MPCU’s (Makerere/Mulago Palliative Care Unit) work in Mulago Hospital with clinical leads the lack of leadership skills in palliative care became evident. Additionally staff questionnaires, interviews with staff working in hospitals, interviews with Ugandan post graduate students on the Diploma in Palliative care during their face to face contact teaching periods were carried out. This highlighted that whilst staff are competent in their own environment and amongst other palliative care professionals, they often lack the confidence and skills for leadership within a wider setting. The project aims to address 3 key problems: 1. The lack of leadership skills and expertise within palliative care health professionals in Uganda. 2. The need for the extension of the number of health professionals with leadership skills in palliative care. 3. The need for more health professionals throughout the health system to be able to provide palliative care within their health setting, thus ensuring palliative care service provision is sustainable and not reliant on only one or two individuals.
