Project description
|
This project is driven by a need to address challenges identified in the Fourth National Eye Health Plan 2016-2020, a strategic eye healthcare plan developed by the Ugandan Ministry of Health. The plan identified the challenge that comprehensive eye health care is not currently accessible to all people of Uganda. In addition, the service is curative-oriented and weak on health prevention, promotion and rehabilitation. Screening programmes help address these challenges. A recommendation of the plan is that screening and management of diabetic retinopathy should be implemented. Community screening will be a key aspect of this implementation, since 72% of the population live in a rural environment. Consequently the plan also emphasised the need for outreach services that focus on marginalised, hard-to-reach communities. This project will focus on carrying out eye healthcare screening clinics in the community. This will be achieved by developing and implementing a series of workshops aimed at eye health workers responsible for setting up and running or participating in eye health care outreach clinics in low-income settings. These workers will include ophthalmologists, ophthalmic clinical officers (OCOs) and ophthalmic nurses (ONs) as well as community health workers involved in eye healthcare. Once the initial workshops have been delivered, attendees will be supported in setting up and carrying out clinics in their communities during this project. The objective is that they will be able to deliver this service without support, on programme completion.
